Had a very uneventful flight across the pond, made especially enjoyable with conversation with 2 guys celebrating their 30th birthdays by going to Oktoberfest. From Ohio, we, of course, traded barbs about the Ohio teams vs. the Pittsburgh teams and Penn State.
Once we touched down, I powered up the phone only to find that our Buccos had lost in extra innings again. Sure hope they can pull tonight's game off. Can't lose this series to the Cubs.
We were the first flight to get in and so we waited about 45 minutes for the flight from Newark to arrive. Everyone was in possession of the luggage so we hailed our coach driver, Horst, and off we went to our hotel.
This will be our home for the next four days. With everyone anxious to freshen up and hit the streets of Berlin, we were quited disappointed to hear that our rooms wouldn't be ready until about 3. Guess there was a bit of a glitch in the booking. So with luggage stowed in a meeting room, we set out to do some exploring.
I had really hoped to get to the library here, but was in no shape to really meet and greet anyone. A group of us decided to get some circulation back to our legs and headed out of the hotel for a brisk walk.
In the "it pays to look up" world, our hotel is located right next to the Embassy of Paraguay. It is really a very plain looking edifice marked only by the flag and plaque.
After about 45 minutes everyone decided that it was time for the first beer of the day and maybe some sustenance. And so with good conversation we enjoyed a fun time together. I didn't take a picture of the one man sleeping at the table. This is so reminiscent of when I would bring students to Europe and they would fll asleep in their spaghetti.
Back to the hotel in the hopes that some of the rooms would be ready. And ours was. It was good to have some time to get organized, get a shower and cool off. As per usual when we travel, Berlin was quite warm today.
Dinner tonight was at 7:00 in the hotel. That was a good thing since it is pouring down rain in Berlin. As we got off the elevator we could tell the choir was having a wonderful time in the lobby bar. This is not a group of teetotalers! In addition to this blog, I am also blogging for the Teutonia Männerchor. Much of the prose will be the same, but there will be more "people" pictures on that blog. Their families want to see them in action.
Dinner was a buffet that consisted of an assortment of salads, peas and carrots, ham slices, potato patties, and tilapia. Dessert was an assortment of brownies, cheesecake squares, and vanilla and chocolate/nutella puddings.
Back to the room to turn in early. Horrified at Jung Ho Kang's injury and the fact that at this time the Pirates are losing 9-4. Maybe by the time I turn the radio off they will have pulled it out. But for now bed is calling. We have been up 36 hours and sleep would be good.
