We had no internet last night and so could not post the blog.
We were pleasantly surprised this morning to wake up and find that our Buccos finally oone a game. Way to go Frankie Liriano.
Onthe coach at nine this morning for a ride to Lübbenau, a picturesque village in the Spreewald.
Our itinerary said we would be going on a 3 hour barge journey. Since we hail from Pittsburgh we all pictured the coal barges that cruise the Ohio. We were in for a very pleasant surprise.
The barges were powered only by the punter. I don't think I would have liked to have been in the one that had Titanic on the back.
Of course, being German and after 9:00 in the morning, libation was necessary. And of course, being that we were outside, it began to rain. Actually, the entire day went between sunny and cloudy, and fits of rain now and then.
Our barge traveled a man-made canal system that provided many bucolic views. It was so quiet and relaxing that the 1 1/2 hours passed very quickly.
Lunch was at the Cafe Venedig, the oldest reed covered Gasthaus in Germany. The food was delicious as was the schwarz Bier. Mine was a type of chile con carne and Earle had an open face pork sandwich with the famous Lübbenau horseradish. The village is also well known for its pickles.
Back on the barges after lunch and continuing on to the village we caught sight of a very interesting yard decoration.
Lübbenau also has a Schloß that has been turned into a hotel and apartments. Then a stroll around town where we came upon a Kunstmarkt and we spotted this hand carved Noah's ark. No way to bring it back.
Our next mode of transportation was a trolley that we took back to the vicinity of the Cafe Venedig where we were greeted by waiters and waitresses in traditional costume.
We had a buffet dinner that was roast pork, catfish, mixed vegetables in horseradish sauce, assorted cucumbers and pickles, a crepe like pancake with onion and bacon, salad, and assorted pastries for dessert. It was very delicious. We keep wondering how we eat so much, but then we are doing a lot of walking. Some of the group take every opportunity to have a rest and libation with any free time more than 15 minutes.
Since I am blogging for the Teutonia Männerchor we attempted a group picture. Can you say herding cats. So this is the group with which we are traveling.
After dinner it was back on our barges that had been lit with lanterns and candles.
Caught up on the blogging on the way back to the hotel. Pleased to turn on the Pirates game and find them winning. We have an early morning tomorrow as we depart Berlin for the North! Not sure I'll be able to make it through the whole game.
